Plants in the office: 3 projects for inspiration

When designing a workplace, there are many variables to consider.

One must balance practical needs and aesthetic expectations, choose functional furnishings, optimize spaces, and most importantly, identify design solutions that promote well-being for people.

In addition to selecting ergonomic workstations and products for acoustic correction of spaces, a useful option for the psychophysical well-being of workers is office plants.

But is it really so?

In this article, we will review the benefits of including plants in workplace design and explore 3 office projects that have benefited from green design solutions for their environments.

The Benefits of Office Plants According to a Norwegian Study

A Norwegian study from the late 1990s examined a sample of 60 individuals divided into 2 groups.

The groups alternated working one year with plants and one year without plants. The study focused on analyzing the effects of greenery in the office during the spring months.

Comparing the participants' symptoms when plants were present and when they were absent, the research group observed that:

  • Feelings of fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating were reduced by 30%
  • Respiratory issues, such as cough and stuffy nose, decreased by 37%
  • Skin symptoms, like dry or reddened skin, were reduced by 23%

Researchers attributed the improvements in psychophysical health to two mechanisms: better air quality and the psychological effect of being in a more pleasant environment.

The presence of plants creates a microclimatic effect that increases humidity and promotes mucous membrane cleansing.

Moreover, office plants purify the air from pollutants, such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Stress-Relieving Office Plants: Which Ones to Choose?

For the beneficial effects to be tangible, it's important to study the workplace and propose the perfect botanical layout.

Each project has unique requirements, but there are certain elements to always consider when designing a workspace.

What characteristics should ideal stress-relieving office plants have?

Here are some examples:

  • Evergreen species suitable for indoor survival
  • Plants resilient in low-light conditions
  • Specimens that require minimal care and maintenance

For those seeking a high aesthetic impact with minimal maintenance, a stabilized lichen wall is a suitable green furnishing solution.

We have dedicated an article on our blog to this topic, A Brief Guide to Understanding Stabilized Lichen.
