The Benefits of Biophilic Design

In this article, Alessandra Parolini, an architect, interviews Bettina Bolton, an expert in Biophilic Design, to explore the multiple benefits this discipline can offer to both indoor and outdoor environments. Alessandra Parolini: Good morning everyone, I am Alessandra Parolini, an architect. Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Bettina Bolton, an expert in Biophilic Design, about the benefits of this discipline for humans and living spaces.

Bettina Bolton: Good morning Alessandra. Yes, Biophilic Design is truly fascinating and rich in benefits, so much so that I took notes to make sure I don't forget anything! We can divide the benefits into five main categories:

  • physical health,
  • psychological health,
  • social benefits,
  • economic and environmental benefits.

Alessandra Parolini: Let's start with the benefits for physical health.

Bettina Bolton: Of course. Biophilic environments have a strong positive impact on the cardiovascular system, the autonomic nervous system, and the immune system. For example, it has been shown that they can reduce heart rate and blood pressure, regulate circadian rhythm, and improve immune system activity.

Alessandra Parolini: And what about psychological health?

Bettina Bolton: The benefits are significant here as well. Environments with natural elements positively influence our emotions and cognition. For instance, a study by Roger Ulrich in the 1980s showed that patients in hospitals with a view of green spaces had a faster postoperative recovery and needed fewer painkillers compared to those with a view of a brick wall.

Alessandra Parolini: Let's talk about social benefits then.

Bettina Bolton: Biophilic spaces can reduce crime and increase socialization. For example, a green wall in a degraded area in Australia led to a decrease in criminal activities. In biophilic neighborhoods, people are more involved in caring for the environment, and the spaces become safer for the elderly and children.

Alessandra Parolini: And from an economic perspective?

Bettina Bolton: The economic benefits can be substantial, even if not immediately visible. Properties with Biophilic Design certification tend to increase in value. For example, hotel rooms with natural views are generally more expensive. In biophilic offices, there is a reduction in absenteeism and an increase in employee productivity and creativity.

Alessandra Parolini: And for private individuals?

Bettina Bolton: Biophilic Design is also very important in homes. Think about home office spaces, which often proved inadequate during the pandemic. Biophilic elements can improve privacy and reduce stress, promoting regeneration after a workday.

Alessandra Parolini: This is fascinating. Let's conclude with the environmental benefits.

Bettina Bolton: Biophilic Design did not originate as a sustainable discipline, but it integrates perfectly with sustainability strategies, improving the environment and contributing to the fight against climate change.
Alessandra Parolini: Thank you, Bettina, for this interesting conversation. You have shown us how Biophilic Design can positively influence our lives and the environment.
